Introduced in April 2011, the pupil premium is allocated to children who are looked after by the local authority, those who have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any point in the last six years (also known as Ever 6 FSM) and for children whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces.
In the 2015-16 financial year the level of premium is £1,320 per primary-aged pupil and £935 for secondary-aged pupils. Schools will continue to receive £1,900 for each child looked after. This increased funding is to reflect the unique challenges children looked after face at school, where they often struggle to keep up with their peers at both primary and secondary level.
With the pupil premium budget increasing to £1.875 billion this year, each school has significantly more resources to ensure the best educational attainment of their disadvantaged pupils. However, with increased resources comes increased expectations and scrutiny from Ofsted and the DfE. Schools must therefore be able to effectively demonstrate that its pupil premium budget is being invested in the pupils who need it most.
