Overview

This interactive two-part introduction to the work of school governors is highly recommended for all governors, especially those recently appointed.

It begins with all the essential information about SCHOOLS AND THE EDUCATION SYSTEM including jargon-busting, categories of school and governor, what governors do (and don’t do), their powers and duties and an overview of the role including advice on what to focus on as a new governor.

Governors’ STRATEGIC ROLE is explored, including the importance of agreeing values and vision, self-evaluation, improvement planning, setting challenging targets and efficient resourcing.

The session then focuses on governors’ ACCOUNTABILITY ROLE in monitoring and evaluating progress the school is making; it covers statutory responsibilities, the headteacher’s report, interpreting data, visiting the school, achieving value for money and what sort of questions to ask.

This course is non-chargeable for those schools within the Governor Services SLA.

To enable participants to contribute meaningfully and effectively to their school and governing body as quickly as possible
To gain an overview of the education system and a clear understanding of the main roles and responsibilities of a school governor, particularly the role in ensuring school improvement

Please note that if your school has not purchased a training package from Octavo Partnership Governor Services, there will be a charge of £104 (for an evening course) or £208 (for a day course).
On completion of the User form please ensure you have added the name and position of the person who has authorised payment for the course (Chair of Governors/Principal/Headteacher). This is for invoicing purposes.
